Just in time for hurricane season, a sales tax holiday will begin on June 8th and run nine consecutive days. This is a great time to stock up on items on your hurricane checklist and purchase them tax-free.
Eligible items include: tarps, batteries, and other store preparation necessities such as coolers, tie-down kits, battery-powered radios and bungee cords, but the items cannot exceed certain pre-determined prices. For instance, flashlights must be $20 or less, and radios can't exceed $50. Portable generators are included, but consumers are limited to models that cost $750 or less. A full list is available on the Florida Department of Revenue's web site at myflorida.com/dor.
Keep in mind that the state has exempted certain businesses from the holiday, so if you buy eligible items at theme parks, entertainment complexes, hotels or airports, you'll have to pay taxes.
And if you buy supplies that are part of a set that includes non-exempt items, you'll have to pay sales tax on the whole set. For example, a set that includes batteries and a battery charger would be subject to taxes because battery chargers are not exempt.
Take advantage of the upcoming tax holiday to replinish supplies for your storm kits, and happy shopping!
