With spring just around the corner, it’s a great time for a “spring break” RV trip. Whether you’re traveling to a close local destination or planning your getaway a lot farther from home, you’ll want to make the trip safely.

At Solace Insurance, we want you to travel safely too. Here are some great tips to help you get there and back without worry, because nothing can ruin an RV trip faster than trouble on the road.

First, know your ride — even if you’re just along for the ride.

Of course, knowing the features (and limitations) of your RV is the first step to safely driving it. Are you towing a car? Be mindful of how that will affect your stopping power and maneuverability. Know the dimensions of your vehicle to help with parking and any tight spots you might encounter on the road. Make sure you know that you can fit under the overpasses and bridges on your route.

And even if you’re just a passenger, it’s a good idea to learn how to drive the RV as well. You might need to take over in an emergency or other situation.

Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance

Just like a car, keeping your RV well-maintained is extremely important. Are your tires in good shape and properly inflated? If you’re towing a car or boat, do you need additional braking power? Are your mirrors angled correctly? Is your safety equipment (for example, your fire extinguisher) in good working order? Doing a walk-around and conducting some quick checks before you leave can save you a lot of frustration down the road.

Your RV is much bigger than a car, of course, and that means you need to act more carefully when you’re driving it.

Know your blind spots and use caution when changing lanes, merging or turning.

Be patient and aware at all times. Consider installing a rear camera to help give you a complete picture of your surroundings.

Other vehicles may act aggressively to get around you, and sometimes will cut you off once they have passed. Prepare for these situations and understand that many drivers don’t realize that you need additional space in front of the RV.

Because your vehicle is far heavier than others, it picks up speed faster when going down hills or mountain passes, so keep an eye on that speedometer.

What about parking?

It’s best to have someone to guide you into a parking spot. If you don’t have anyone with you, check out the area before you try to pull in.

Practice turns and backing up before you leave on your trip.

Of course, never park for the night in an area unless you have approval or know that it’s safe.

Daylight Savings Time starts on Sunday, March 8th at 2am, so don't forget to move your clocks forward one hour and replace the batteries in your smoke alarms.

Did You Know...Daylight saving was first recognized as an energy saving aspect during World War II when Double Summer Time was applied in Britain which moved the clocks two hours ahead of GMT during the summer and one hour ahead of GMT during the winter.

As we approach the peak of Hurricane Season on September 10th, and with the rise of natural disasters, it is the perfect time to highlight National Preparedness Month 2025.

This year's theme is: "Prepare to Protect: Preparing for Disasters to Create a Lasting Legacy." Talk with your family and loved ones about scenarios you could find yourself in and discuss plans to respond to those scenarios.

It’s gardening season but, with water restrictions in place in many areas, water usage is a continuing concern. Even if conditions aren't dry at the moment, it's a good idea to think about how to use this precious natural resource - and how you can use it more wisely.

Here are five great tips from your friends at Solace to help:

Think about where to plant. Your space has a big impact on the amount of water you need to use. The same backyard can have areas that get different amounts of sun, shade and rain, for example. A flat spot will hold moisture better than one that is sloped. And, don't forget to check the soil - clay soils will retain water much longer than sandy soils.
Choose the right plants. Different plants and vegetables thrive in different conditions. Pick plants that will work well in your climate, and group plants with similar watering needs in the same area.
Increase moisture retention with mulch. Mulch does more than insulate the soil and reduce evaporation. It is also effective at reducing weeds, which can suck up water meant for your plants. And, mulch doesn’t have to be bark or manure; it can be a plastic sheet. Add a soaker hose or drip system underneath for the best results.
Know how much water your garden is getting. Install a rain gauge (or even a tuna can) so you always know how much water your garden has received — either naturally or from sprinklers. The average garden needs about an inch of water a week. If you can feel moisture just under the surface of the soil, you probably don’t need to water. And, remember, sprinklers don’t always provide even coverage, so monitor where the water goes, not just how long you’ve had them on.
Install the right irrigation. One of the best ways to get water to your garden is through a soaker hose or a drip irrigation system. Both are (usually) inexpensive and easy to install. They are beneficial because they don’t simply spray water. They instead provide it in measured doses right at the root zone.

With a little bit of planning (and some dirt on your hands), you truly can have a water-friendly garden. Enjoy the season!
