Fall is full of surprises. Keep an eye out for these common hiding spots for pet health hazards:
- Yards - leaf piles, wood piles and heavy brush can conceal bacteria, cold, poisonous mushrooms, sharp objects, uneven ground and unfriendly critters, all of which can turn a jump of fun into a trip to the veterinarian.
- Air ducts - Dust mites, a common allergen, hide out in the ductwork of homes and buildings during the summer months. Then, when the heating system is turned on, they flood throughout the home, causing your pet to sneeze or itch. A certified filter on your vents, in concert with mattress covers and regular cleaning, can help manage your pet's allergies.
- Backpacks - Many pets mistake back-to-school supplies like glue sticks, markers and pencil erasers for new toys. While most are non-toxic for pets, ingestion can lead to stomach upset and dangerous intestinal blockages.
